Dave Beer – The Artist Behind Back to Basics
Dave Beer is the founder of the legendary club night Back to Basics and has been its creative driving force for over thirty years. While he is widely known as a promoter, Dave is first and foremost a passionate artist whose distinctive visual style has become inseparable from the Back to Basics identity.
The Iconic Back to Basics Flyers
Since launching Back to Basics in 1991, Dave has personally created the majority of the night’s flyers and visual artwork. His early designs drew heavily from punk aesthetics, featuring bold, provocative imagery, controversial slogans, and a raw DIY attitude.
One of his most famous pieces reworked the Sex Pistols’ God Save the Queen artwork with the iconic line “Two Steps Further Than Any Other Fucker” – a design that Jamie Reid himself gave Dave his blessing to use.
A Versatile Fine Artist
Beyond graphic design, Dave Beer is an accomplished painter and mixed-media artist. He creates vibrant, surreal original paintings, often featuring saturated colours, expressive brushwork, and deeply personal symbolism.
Over the years Dave has taken on numerous private commissions, ranging from portraits of people’s dogs and children to more conceptual pieces. His style blends pop art simplicity with surreal elements, creating works that feel both playful and thought-provoking.
New Editions and Variations
While Dave’s classic Back to Basics artwork has appeared on limited prints and exhibition pieces in the past, this collection features brand new editions and specially reworked variations of his artwork that are being released for the very first time on clothing and merchandise.
A Complete Creative Vision
For Dave Beer, the music, the party, and the artwork have always been one and the same. His visual work is not just decoration — it is an essential part of the Back to Basics ethos. Whether through a hand-drawn flyer in 1992 or a new painting today, Dave continues to create with the same honesty, energy, and fearless creativity that has defined his entire career.
