The Sound of Back to Basics

Since launching on 23rd November 1991, Back to Basics has maintained one of the strongest and most consistent musical identities in UK club culture. Founded by Dave Beer as a reaction against the increasingly commercial acid house scene, the night was born with a clear mission — to keep things raw, underground, and “two steps further than any other fucker.”

The Musical Ethos

Back to Basics has always championed a cutting-edge house sound with a punk attitude. The music policy blends deep house, groovy house, techno, and eclectic influences, always staying true to its underground roots. It’s never been about following trends — it’s about playing the best records of the moment, whether they’re brand new or lost classics.

From the very beginning, the night was known for its forward-thinking selections and for giving UK debuts to many international artists. The atmosphere has always encouraged DJs to play with energy and personality rather than sticking to a rigid formula.

Key People & Residents

Over the past three decades, several DJs have become synonymous with the Back to Basics sound:

  • Ralph Lawson – The original resident DJ and a cornerstone of the night for nearly 30 years.
  • Tristan Da Cunha – A true product of Basics. He started coming as a young raver and became a resident at a very young age. His energetic and eclectic style perfectly embodies the Back to Basics spirit.
  • Dave Beer himself increasingly took to the decks, bringing his own no-nonsense approach to the booth.

The night has also been shaped by legendary guests including Carl Cox, Sasha, Andrew Weatherall, Derrick Carter, Doc Martin, François K, and many more.

Influences & Musical Roots

Dave Beer’s musical taste was forged in punk rock, electro, funk, and the early acid house movement. His experiences seeing The Clash, roadie work with The Ramones, and discovering acid house in America all fed into the rebellious yet dancefloor-focused sound of Back to Basics.

The night has always mixed underground house with funk, disco, and leftfield selections — never afraid to surprise the dancefloor.

A Lasting Legacy

More than thirty years later, Back to Basics remains one of the longest-running independent club nights in the world. Its influence on UK club culture is undeniable — it helped put Leeds firmly on the map and proved that attitude and musical integrity will always beat commercial polish.

This is more than just a club night. It’s a way of life.
